It may take several hours for the feeling in your wrist and hand to return back to normal. During open surgery, your surgeon will create an incision at the bottom of your palm then divide the carpal ligament using a knife by widening the carpal tunnel to relieve pressure. This will numb the area, ensuring you don’t feel any discomfort during the procedure. If you start to feel any pain during the operation, you must let your surgeon know. Given the smaller incision, patients who have endoscopic carpal tunnel release can have less scar sensitivity and lower risk of wound complications after surgery. In endoscopic carpal tunnel release, a hand surgeon makes a small incision in the wrist area and uses a camera and specialized instruments to release the transverse carpal ligament from the inside out. If the trigger finger is because of localized inflammation with a relatively short history then a single injection of steroid may get rid of the problem. When the symptoms are long standing, a minor surgical procedure may be necessary.
Once numb the surgeon will release the tight ligament via a cut in the midline of your palm just past where the wrist creases. This will be stitched and dressed with a bulky bandage or occasionally a plaster cast. You should find that your hand regains its strength over time by carrying out your normal, everyday activities.
This is a common condition caused by the compression of a nerve to the hand at the level of the wrist. Your surgeon will review your x-rays, ask what happened and will examine your hand. In addition they may ask you some questions about your general health. If the fracture is severe and requires surgery, a CT scan may be arranged. After the surgery the bandage should be removed on Day 3 but the finger should be moved immediately. At two weeks, the stitches are removed and you can use your hand normally.
The incision will be made in the natural crease of the upper lid to ensure minimal scarring. In cases of advanced compression, the nerve may not recover fully even after release and in those cases, surgery prevents further damage. These are open surgery and endoscopic surgery, otherwise known as keyhole surgery. In order to have carpal tunnel surgery, you will be asked to lie on your back with your arm stretched out, resting it on a special operating board. This is a tight cuff that will stop the blood flow in your arm during the operation.
